Each of us knew there was time and more for us to be late, and still reach the mark in time. And each of us knew it was time for class, but made it within our code of honor to skip. It was only once someone went forward, and for hundreds of years no one recalled it, that I understood heaven gets closer every day. Then we parted on the corner of all streets, Piously forgetting that some one watches over us. All paths began at our doors, yet we only went out to fire up a cigarette. This long night was ahead, and I was sure the we would never rest; but you know, heaven gets closer every day. Sister of mine, where were you looking, when dawn came between us like a wall? Did you know that it would happen to me when you took my hand? And you may move ahead or fall behind, Rise and fall, and then rise anew like a star. But it only takes the ash of your cigarettes - that ash of the empires - and it may happen to you. The voices of those gods who believe in you, still call for you, though you are so slow off the mark, Know that heaven gets closer, I know heaven, gets closer, Listen, heaven gets closer, Look, heaven gets closer every day.
